Risk Assessment and Management in Care FAQ
A risk assessment is a careful examination of what in the work environment could cause harm to individuals at the current time or in the future. In health and social care it includes all users of the service offered (such as patients, employees and visitors on-site) and extends to home visits, care homes or anywhere employees may work.
The Health and Safety Executive's Five steps to risk assessment are:
Step 1: Identify the hazards.
Step 2: Decide who might be harmed and how.
Step 3: Evaluate the risks and decide on precautions.
Step 4: Record your findings and implement them.
Step 5: Review your risk assessment and update if necessary.
Risk assessments are very important as they form an integral part of an occupational health and safety management plan. They help to:
1) create awareness of hazards and risk
2) identify who may be at risk (e.g., employees, cleaners, visitors, contractors, the public, etc.)
3) determine whether a control program is required for a particular hazard
4) determine if existing control measures are adequate or if more should be done
5) prevent injuries or illnesses, especially when done at the design or planning stage
6) prioritize hazards and control measures
7) meet legal requirements where applicable

Do courses expire?
There is no expiry date on course credits. Once a credit has been bought it can be allocated at any time. However, should the credit have been allocated to the delegate, each learner then has 12 months to complete the course.
In other words, unallocated course credits have no expiry date. If for example you ordered 1000 licences, and allocated 600 courses in year 1, you would have 400 licences left to allocate in year 2.
