Manual Handling of Objects FAQ
Manual handling relates to the moving of items either by lifting, lowering, carrying, pushing or pulling. Safe manual handling techniques are important because the right technique can significantly reduce the risk of injury.
There is not an exact weight limit for manual handling. The risk of back injury increases during lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling of loads, if the load is too heavy. A weight of 20 to 25 kg is heavy to lift for most people, especially if the load is handled several times in an hour.
The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 (MHOR) requires employers to manage any and all risks to their employees when moving objects. As part of this they must:
1) Make a suitable and sufficient assessment of the risk of injury from any hazardous manual handling operations that cannot be avoided
2) Reduce the risk of injury as far is reasonably practicable. Where possible, mechanical assistance must be employed (i.e. a hoist or sack trolley.) Where this is not possible then the employer must show that they have explored changes to the task, the load and the working environment
3) Avoid hazardous manual handling operations by redesigning the task to avoid moving the load, ideally by automating or mechanising the process

Do courses expire?
There is no expiry date on course credits. Once a credit has been bought it can be allocated at any time. However, should the credit have been allocated to the delegate, each learner then has 12 months to complete the course.
In other words, unallocated course credits have no expiry date. If for example you ordered 1000 licences, and allocated 600 courses in year 1, you would have 400 licences left to allocate in year 2.
