Allergen Awareness FAQ
Food allergies and intolerances are life changing. In the UK they affect around 8% of children and 2% of adults. In December 2014, the law on how allergen information is provided by food businesses changed, to make it easier when buying food or eating out with an allergy or intolerance.
The following is a list of ingredients that may cause allergies:
• celery
• cereals that contain gluten (including wheat, rye, barley and oats)
• crustaceans (including prawns, crabs and lobsters)
• eggs
• fish
• lupin (lupins are common garden plants, and the seeds from some varieties are sometimes used to make flour)
• milk
• molluscs (including mussels and oysters)
• mustard
• tree nuts – such as almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts, brazil nuts, cashews, pecans, pistachios and macadamia nuts
• peanuts
• sesame seeds
• soybeans
• sulphur dioxide and sulphites (preservatives that are used in some foods and drinks)
In the UK, any pre-packed food or drink sold that include any of the above must clearly state so on the label.
To comply with current EU Legislation, all food workers must have appropriate Allergen Awareness Training to enable them to have a good understanding of food allergens. Examples of those that work within the Food Industry who should undertake Allergen Training are as follows:
1) those that are preparing unpackaged food (IE cooks / chefs)
2) production workers who are involved in the manufacturing process of foods (production lines, bakeries, food packaging services)
3) those that are in a supervisory or management role in the food industry (IE plant managers or supervisors)

Do courses expire?
There is no expiry date on course credits. Once a credit has been bought it can be allocated at any time. However, should the credit have been allocated to the delegate, each learner then has 12 months to complete the course.
In other words, unallocated course credits have no expiry date. If for example you ordered 1000 licences, and allocated 600 courses in year 1, you would have 400 licences left to allocate in year 2.
